Blue Flamingo boeken

“I barter in dreams”: that’s what I sometimes answer when people ask me what I do for a living. Of course, I could tell them that I collect 78 r.p.m. records, or that I deejay these shellac discs under the name Blue Flamingo. But that is only the outer layer.

I love music. I’m not aware of any other form of art that can render and play with emotions so directly. It’s so powerful that it can spontaneously make people laugh of cry, or uncover hidden desires. Music stirs up masses, and even stronger, it seduces even the most reserved among us to move to its pulses. But perhaps most exceptionally, music has the ability to attach itself to our memories and dreams.

Music is invisible, intangible, and immaterial. I don’t think we can imagine the utter amazement it caused in 1877, when Edison discovered how to capture something as ungraspable as sound. To me, the 78 r.p.m. record is the most beautiful shape in which the invisible is visualized, and the intangible materialized. It’s a little piece of art in itself, but perhaps I am biased.

In a world that is increasingly focussed on comfort, collecting 78 r.p.m. records is all about the immeasurable willingness to make an effort in exchange for a wonderful experience. I hope to be able to communicate all this with my compilation albums and performances.
